M. H. Atwater (born Phyllis Marie DeKeyser, September 19, 1937) is an American writer and researcher on near-death experiences and spirituality.

Near-death studies

Atwater is a researcher in the field of near-death studies and its cross-section with spirituality. Atwater earned a Letters of the Humanities doctorate from the International College of Spiritual and Psychic Studies in Montreal, Canada in 1992; and was awarded an honorary PhD in Therapeutic Counselling in 2005 from Medicina Alternativa Institute in Colombo, Sri Lanka, an institution which focuses on alternative medicine.

In 2005, the International Association for Near-death Studies (IANDS) presented her with an Outstanding Service Award and the National Association of Transpersonal Hypnotherapists awarded her a Lifetime Achievement Award.^[1] She has been a Prayer Chaplain since 2004.^{[citation needed]}
